Kick it h4rdc0r3!

Let's talk kick for a minute.
Kick drum that is. Aside from classical and jazz, the kick drum is quintisential to a song mix in most every music genre. It is a foundation, it gives sense of tempo, gets the crowd moving, gets booties to shake, etc..
Depending on the producer, one wants to have a good mix of all the instruments. Drums are the trickiest, since there is jsu so much to deal with. Nevertheless, you want that kick drum to come through. It can come through subtly (Tori Amos, Diana Krall, Everclear) or noticbly. (Queen, Zepplin, Mot electronic music)
It's very important. It's one of the sonic adhesives that sometimes helps song not suck so hard. I like phat kicks, personally, maybe more than I should but oh well.
I just got a copy of the VNV Nation "Futureperfect" Cd, and it's alright, but there is quite a lack of kick on that record, IMHO. You never notice it in a club because the the bass is cranked and the lo-mids and mids are eq'd for your booty shaking pleasure. Kind of worries me since this was abig hit of a record that was mostly done with software synths, and that's the direction I want to go, snd-design wise. I just can't afford $6000 in gear, I'd get a Tibook running Digi 002 before I buy loads of keybords, anyway.
I'll have to pray on my m4d 4ud10 sk11z to et me through...
So remember, mo' kick good. No kick baaad!! (Unless your singing "Beth", then you don't want a kick, jsut a well-tuned piano)
