Since I am procrastinanting, I realized something today @ Noah's bagels, wating for my stuff;

Peter Gabriel's "Big Time" has a fantastically phat bass line. It's not a normal bass sound, it's processed, but just processedenough. Could even be a synth. My guess it's a bass, eq'd witha little punch and filtered slightly with a bass synth pedal. Just enough to give it that nice kick.

Of course, the accompanying mixdown of the other instrumentation helps as well, but I just felt it was a dope ass phatty bass line. It is Tny Levin, after all. I got to see him rip it up w/ King Crimson in 1996 at the Greek Theatre.

Just my $.02 on the subject.
