In politics, as in sports, they call that a Hail Mary - and it's going wide.
McCain's main criticism against Obama is experience and foreign policy preparedness, and now he's picked a running mate who's never had a full term as anything. This is not insignificant considering how many people expect McCain to die in office.
Sure, some of the PUMAs will vote for him, but they were going to anyway. I think he just lost more votes than he gained with this. This smacks of desperate pandering by a campaign that is increasingly fearful that it's hit its ceiling just as Obama's is about to start its rise.
I know this a long shot surprise call, and there's plenty of reasons for the GO base to be more skeptical now, but it plays nicely to the "Reeely Beeg Sheew" on TV and Web, and I'm just afraid it's enough to convince the sheeple.
We'll just have to see, but for right now most of the reaction I'm seeing from the bobbleheads is "uhhhhhh... wait, what???"
I'm sure as the day grows older and the spin doctors have a chance to chew over what they've been thrown, they will attempt to construct a narrative in which this choice makes sense - perfect sense! Hell, it's a home run! - but it's going to seem pretty thin.
I think what appalls me, is that if I had to choose between Obama and Hilary, her being a woman could carry that argument for me. But, this is asking women to vote for her because she's a woman, and _no known other reason_. She's not pro-choice, she's creationist friendly. What it does, is hope the Dems make a mistake, say something ugly that drives people back over the fence like "Send her home to be a mommy for her kid, that's what a woman is good for." But I really doubt the Dems are going to say anything that flat wrong.
I have to agree with Stronium on this one...it's just pandering to the Hillarites to covet a few more independent votes. I think this weakens McCain greatly because there were tons of other more qualified candidates out there...he picked one solely based on sex and that she's a "maverick"...she has no claims to experience any more than Obama does. This will alienate a lot of conservatives though they'll still vote for the McCain ticket...
I don't think this will hurt Obama at all...especially once the media explodes all over her "scandal". It's silly, really...but you know how the media goes overboard on stuff like this and conservatives aren't very forgiving for their "perfect" leaders. Flaws aren't seen as points of character for them...
